Hades 2 Beginner's Guide 2026: First Run Tips, Boons, and Meta-Progression

Everything a new Hades 2 player needs to know: boon priority, arcana selection, weapon aspects basics, and the meta-progression that drives long-term unlocks.

By Tom Karlsson 闂?/span> 闂?/span> Updated

Hades 2 is one of the most accessible action roguelikes on the market, but it has a steep skill ceiling. New players can clear their first run in a few hours with the right approach, but mastering the game takes dozens of hours.

This guide covers everything a new player needs to start winning runs: which weapon to pick first, how to prioritize Boons, how to use Arcana, and how the meta-progression unlocks work. This is a companion to our Hades 2 weapon tier list: that article covers the weapons, this covers everything else.

First 5 runs: the learning phase

In your first 5 runs, your goal is not to win. Your goal is to:

  1. Learn the controls. The basics (attack, dash, cast, special) are intuitive. The advanced techniques (burst-cast, perfect-dash, charged-attack) take time to master.

  2. Meet the gods. Each run, you will be offered a boon from a god. The boons from different gods stack to create powerful combinations. Pay attention to which gods give you what.

  3. Understand the meta-progression. Between runs, you can spend resources to unlock permanent upgrades. The meta-progression makes each run start a little easier than the last.

  4. Die often. Death is the fastest way to learn the enemy patterns. Pay attention to what killed you and adjust your play.

In your first 5 runs, you should aim to reach the second boss at least once. If you beat the first boss regularly by the 5th run, you are ready for the harder content.

Weapon choice for new players

The Witch’s Staff is the most beginner-friendly weapon. It has high damage per cast, generous range, and a forgiving hit box. Pick it for your first 3-5 runs until you learn the basics of dash-canceling, special timing, and arena positioning.

Once you have cleared the game with the Witch’s Staff, experiment with the other 5 weapons. Each weapon has a different play pattern: the Blades are aggressive, the Coat is defensive, the Axe rewards charge attacks, the Skull rewards positioning, and the Rail rewards aim. Try each one for at least 3 runs and see which play style feels natural.

Boon priority

When the game offers you boons, prioritize in this order:

  1. Athena (defensive). Deflect dash and Divine Dash protect you from enemy attacks. Most important early-game boon for new players.

  2. Aphrodite (single-target damage). Weak is the strongest damage modifier in the game. Pair Aphrodite with Athena for a balanced offense/defense build.

  3. Poseidon (AoE damage). Poseidon’s wave attacks hit multiple enemies, which is essential for clearing rooms quickly. Pairs with most weapons.

  4. Dionysus (sustain). Festive Fog and High Tolerance give you healing, which is essential in the late-game stages where damage output matters more than defense.

Once you have 3 of these gods in your kit, branch out to other gods (Zeus, Demeter, Ares) based on your weapon and play style.

Arcana selection

Arcana cards are the meta-progression layer of Hades 2. You unlock arcana slots as you progress through the game, and each arcana gives you a permanent modifier for all your runs.

For new players, the best arcana strategy is:

  1. Start with the cheap arcana (1-3 cost). These unlock quickly and give you a baseline of permanent power.

  2. Prioritize the arcana that match your play style. If you prefer aggressive play, boost your attack and damage arcana. If you prefer defensive play, boost your health and shield arcana.

  3. Avoid high-cost arcana early. They cost more resources, and you lose the chance to use multiple cheaper arcana.

The single best arcana for new players is Death Defiance. It gives you a second chance when you die, which is invaluable while you are still learning the game.

Meta-progression explained

Hades 2 has a deep meta-progression system. Between runs, you use three resources to unlock permanent upgrades:

  • Keys unlock new weapons and weapon aspects. The most important resource for new players.

  • Gemstones unlock Arcana slots and upgrade the cost of equipped Arcana. The second most important resource.

  • Nectar unlocks Keepsakes (items that give you passive effects during runs) and other story content.

The optimal meta-progression strategy for new players:

  1. Unlock all 6 weapons as soon as you can afford to. This gives you access to all the play styles.

  2. Unlock 3-4 Arcana slots before upgrading any specific Arcana beyond the cheapest tier.

  3. Save Nectar for the late-game content. It unlocks story rewards that give you permanent power.

Combat basics

The combat in Hades 2 rewards three core skills:

  1. Dash-canceling. After an attack, dash to cancel the recovery animation. This lets you attack twice in quick succession.

  2. Perfect-dash. Time your dash so that it ends just before an enemy attack lands. The attack parries (deflect) and you take no damage. This is the single most important skill in the game.

  3. Burst-casting. If you have multiple casts, hold the cast button to release all of them at once. This is the strongest damage technique for cast-focused builds.

Spend your first 5 runs focusing on perfecting your dash-cancel and perfect-dash timing. These two skills alone will carry you through the first 50% of the game.

Common mistakes

The most common new player mistake is not dashing. Many new players try to survive by attacking and dodging, but the game is designed around dash-canceling and perfect-dash. If you are not dashing aggressively, you are playing wrong.

The second most common mistake is picking the wrong boons. New players often pick the boon that looks cool (e.g., big damage numbers) instead of the boon that fits their play style. Athena and Aphrodite are the safest boons for new players because they work in any build.

The third most common mistake is not using Arcana. Arcana are the easiest meta-progression to ignore, but they provide permanent power-ups that last across runs. Even the cheapest Arcana cards give meaningful boosts.

The fourth most common mistake is not learning boss patterns. Each boss has a specific attack pattern that you can learn. If you die to the same boss twice in a row, take a moment to watch the boss’s attack animation and find a safe spot to dash.

The end-game path

After 30-40 hours of play, you will clear the main story of Hades 2. The end-game content unlocks:

  • Heat system: makes each run harder but more rewarding. The system is excellent for replay value.

  • Prophecy system: tracks specific achievements that give you permanent unlocks. Most of these are very long-term goals.

  • Alternative weapons and aspects: the secret aspects (Witch’s Staff, Moonburst Axe, Transcendent Rail) are the strongest weapons in the game. We cover these in our weapon tier list.

The full game takes 80-150 hours of active play to “complete” (all prophecies, all weapon aspects unlocked, all relationship content).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best weapon for a new Hades 2 player?

The Witch's Staff is the most beginner-friendly weapon in Hades 2. It has high damage per cast, generous range, and a forgiving hit box. The Sister Blades are also a strong pick for new players who prefer aggressive play. Avoid the Rail and Skull until you have cleared the game at least once.

Which god should I prioritize for boons in Hades 2?

In your first 10 runs, prioritize Athena (defensive dash), Aphrodite (weak application), and Poseidon (blast damage and movement). These three gods cover the core needs: defense, single-target damage, and AoE damage. As you learn the game, branch out to other gods based on the build you want to play.

How important is Arcana selection in Hades 2?

Very important once you understand it. Arcana cards are powerful modifiers that you can equip between runs. Start with the cheapest arcana (cost 1-3) and focus on the ones that boost the stats you care about for your build. Higher-cost arcana unlock later and are extremely powerful, but starting with expensive arcana slows your early meta-progression.

Should I use Death Defiance or not in Hades 2?

Yes for new players. Death Defiance gives you a second chance when you die, which is invaluable while learning the game. Once you have cleared the game and want to optimize your runs, you can swap Death Defiance for other arcana that boost your damage or movement speed. The skill ceiling in Hades 2 is partly about knowing when to drop Death Defiance.

How long does it take to fully complete Hades 2?

The full game requires clearing the surface, the underworld, and the final boss. Realistic completion time for new players is 30-60 hours of active play. The post-game content (Heat system, prophecy system) can add 100+ hours. Most dedicated players clear the main story within 40 hours of active play.
